St. Francis of Assisi was deep in prayer before the San Damiano cross, when he heard the voice of God, commanding him to "rebuild my church".
 
The crucifix on this rugged decade rosary was based on that famous San Damiano Cross that was painted in the 1100s and hung in an abandoned chapel near Assisi.
 
The cross depicts Jesus on the Cross, with Our Mother Mary and St. John the Evangelist on His right. And on His left, Mary Magdalene, Mary (Mother of James), and the centurion who asked Jesus Christ to heal his son in Matthew's Gospel. Read more about this cross here.
 
The purpose of this cross was to teach the meaning of Christ's Passion, the events depicted, and to strengthen the faith of the people.
